Pádraig O’Kiely qualified with a degree in Agricultural Science from University College Dublin (1978) and has worked as a research scientist with An Foras Talúntais/Teagasc at Grange since that time. He received a master’s degree in Agricultural Science in 1980 and a PhD degree in 1985. He spent a sabbatical year with the USDA Dairy Forage Research Centre in Madison, Wisconsin during 1986. His main research activities have been in forage production, silage conservation, nutrition of beef cattle and the development of beef production systems. More recently, he has undertaken research on reducing enteric methane emissions from cattle and developing alternative commercial uses for grass biomass (e.g. anaerobic digestion, fibre-based products).
